Ayurvedic remedies for acidity

Excessive secretion of gastric acid or juice in the stomach causes acidity or acid reflux. It leads to gas formation in the stomach, heartburn and sore taste in the mouth. It is also termed as hyperacidity. Acidity is cause due to consumption of spicy and fried foods, erratic eating timing, drinking too much alcohol, excessive smoking, irregular food habits etc. According to Ayurveda, it is caused due to increased Pitta dosha in the body.
There are a number of Ayurvedic remedies for acidity that can effectively treat and prevent acidity without any side-effects. Some of them are:

Bananas:

Bananas are rich in potassium. Eating a ripe banana helps maintain the acid level in your stomach and relief from acidity. It is also content high fiber which helps food to digest quickly.

Tulsi:

Tulsi or basil leaves help to produce more mucous in your stomach and reduce secretion of gastric acid. Chewing 5-6 tulsi leave will relief you from gastric problems.

Cold milk:

Milk contains a high amount of calcium which prevents the secretion of gastric acid and enables to absorb it. Drinking a glass of chilled milk will instantly relief from the discomfort cause by acidity. You can also mix a teaspoon of ghee in warm milk and drink it. It acts as a liner at your stomach and prevents acidity.

Fennel seeds or Saunf:

Fennel seeds contain anti-ulcer properties which help in cooling down the stomach. It also helps in digestion and constipation. Chewing a few fennel seeds will relief you from burning sensation

Elaichi or cardamom:

Elaichi or cardamom stimulates digestion. According to Ayurveda, it helps balance all the three dosha- vata, kapha, pitta. You can boil elaichi in water and drinking it when it cools down soothes the stomach lining and relieve from excess acid in the stomach.

Mint leaves or pudina:

Mint is an effective remedy for acidity, gas formation and indigestion. It helps in cooling the burning sensation and improves digestion. You can just chew on its leaves or boil it water as tea and drink it to relief from acidity or indigestion.

Ginger:

Ginger helps to produce mucous in our stomach and reduces the effect of the acid protecting it from ulcer. It also helps in improving digestion. Chewing a small amount of ginger can get relief from acidity. You can also try boiling it in water and drinking it when it cools down..

Indian gooseberry or Amla:

Amla or Indian gooseberry is one of the oldest remedy recommended by ayurveda for acidity or gastic. It is very rich in vitamin C and is used for varieties of problem regarding digestion. You can eat it raw or have a spoon of amla power mixed in water twice daily to prevent acidity.

You can also practice some of the yoga asana that are effective for acidity and digestion such as Ujjayi (ocean breath), Sheetkari pranayam (the hissing breath), Bhujangasana (cobra pose), Padmasana (lotus pose), Sheetali Pranayama( the cooling Breath) etc.
