Thyroid is one of the endocrine glands which controlled the metabolism of the body. It is situated in front of the neck and it produces a hormone that helps functioning of the body. But if the thyroid gland produces hormones more or less than its normal amount than it is thyroid disorders. Disorders of Thyroid are of two types. They are hypothyroidism and hyperthyroidism.
According to Ayurveda thyroid disorders are cause due to the imbalance of the tri-dosha. But ayurvedic treatment can cure thyroid disorders and problems effectively.
Hypothyroidism: here the thyroid gland produces very less hormone. It may be cause due to iodine deficiency, inflammation of the thyroid or pituitary dysfunctional. Some of its symptoms are depression, fatigue, weight gain, hormonal imbalance, dry skin etc.
Remedies for hypothyroidism:
Coconut oil is very effective for those suffering from hypothyroidism since it contain medium chain fatty acids. Coconut oil can be included in your daily diet.
Kanchanara (purple mountain ebony):
Kanchanara plants should be boiled in water and drink this decoction twice a day on empty stomach to help cure hypothyroidism.
Jalakumbhi (pistia straticies):
Jalakumbhi is also very effective for treating hypothyroidism. Drinking its juice help increase the amount of iodine in your body and help cure hypothyroidism. Its paste can also be applied directly on the swelling area of the neck.
Hyperthyroidism or thyrotoxicosis:
Here the thyroid gland produces excessive hormones. It is common among women than man of the ages 30-50 years. Some of its symptoms are menstrual disturbance, anxious, irritable, hysterical etc.
Remedies for hyperthyroidism
Flax seeds are known for its anti-oxidant and anti-inflammatory properties. It is very effective for curing thyroid related problems. Its paste should be applied on the throat to cure goiter cause by hyperthyroidism.
Goiter is the main disease caused by hyperthyroidism and a paste made of dandelion and butter is very effective for treating it. This paste should be applied on the swollen goiter while it’s warm for 20 minutes for about a week.
Ujjaji is one of the best pranayama for the treatment of thyroid related problems. And Sarvang asana is the most suitable yoga asana for thyroid.
