Constipation refers to the difficulty or irregularity in bowel movement. It is a common gastrointestinal problem that may influence both adults and children. It is common among aged, pregnant women and children. The main cause of constipation is due to unhealthy diets and lifestyle. Some of the other causes of constipation are dehydration, low fiber diets, travelling, hormonal imbalance, depression, lack of physical exercise, illness, high blood pressure and so on. It is known as Ahana in ayurveda. According to Ayurveda , constipation is cause due to the high proportion of the vata dosha in the body.

Constipation can be quite painful and become a distress to your life. It may be chronic or temporary. Taking laxatives for the condition often results in the person becoming dependent on it. So the best way to deal with constipation is by ayurvedic treatment which is very effective without any side effects.

  • Triphala churna:

  • It is the best ayurvedic remedy for constipation. Triphala churna is a mixture of Indian gooseberry, haritaki, and vibhitaki, it is both a tonic and a laxative. Triphala with honey should be taken twice a day, upon rising and just before bed.

  • Isabgol:

  • It is an ayurvedic herb which is easily available. Drinking a glass of warm water mixed with a tablespoon of isabgol at bedtime will help you relief from constipation.

  • Bael fruit:

  • Ripe bael fruit is an effective natural laxative. You need to drink its juice for two to three months. It will help soften bowels and flush them out of your body.

  • Licorice:

  • It is an effective ayurvedic remedy for the treatment constipation. Licorice powder should be taken with water and jiggery before bedtime.

  • Cassia:

  • The pulp of ripe fruit of the cassia tree is a very effective laxative for the treatment of constipation. It is a popular ayurvedic treatment since it has no side effects even if it is taken by children and pregnant women.

    Consume oranges every day before bedtime since it is rich in vitamin C and fiber and helps stimulate bowel movement. Regular physical exercise or yoga relieve constipation and help proper bowel movement.
